La tecnología, de la mano del fortalecimiento artístico y conceptual de los profesionales, nos ha dotado de herramientas para hacer posibles las ideas más ambiciosas y creativas en los proyectos audiovisuales. Los artistas de efectos visuales y de animación 3D continúan subiendo la apuesta cada día y cautivando audiencias alrededor del mundo.
Entre los integrantes del Centro Audiovisual Medellín, tenemos la fortuna de contar con Alejandro López y su empresa Vita Estudios de Animación, ganadora del León de Oro de Cannes a la Creatividad en la categoría Outdoors en 2013 y, además hizo parte de “En Busca del Aire”, película ganadora en la categoría Mejor Cortometraje en el Festival de Cine de Cartagena de Indias en 2015.
Más de diez años de experiencia en la realización de efectos visuales y animación 3D en diferentes proyectos y con diferentes marcas, lo convierten en una voz autorizada para hablar del tema.

¿Qué son los efectos visuales?
Desde que decidimos contar historias pintando con luz, estéticamente tomamos la decisión de plasmar nuestra propia idea de la realidad a través de diferentes técnicas. Los efectos visuales existen casi desde que nació la industria del cine. “Hace algunos años, el término más común y utilizado era efectos especiales”, cuenta Alejandro. “Hoy en día, los conceptos de efectos especiales y visuales han tomado caminos diferentes”.
Efectos especiales “es todo lo que se hace durante el rodaje: explosiones, maquillaje, arnés, cuerdas y el trabajo con actores en el set. Por otro lado, los efectos visuales es todo lo que se puede hacer en postproducción”. Así mismo, según explica Alejandro, “existen dos niveles de efectos visuales: los que son creados con anticipación desde la narrativa y la historia, y aquellos orientados a la corrección de errores y dificultades que hay en el rodaje”.
Pensados desde la preproducción, los efectos visuales tienen un rol fundamental. “Cuando se está buscando grabar unos actores en un escenario fantástico o fuera de lo común, en una nave espacial, otro planeta u otra ciudad a la que es difícil acceder por presupuestos, se pueden grabar en un set con un estudio y un fondo verde, y nosotros nos encargamos de borrar el fondo y ubicar los escenarios que se necesiten digitalmente”, asegura.
Una vez realizado el rodaje, los efectos visuales vienen al rescate para la corrección de los errores inevitables en una producción. “Básicamente, hoy en día, además de reemplazar fondos, podemos limpiar el set, borrar micrófonos, cables, personajes o actores que no se necesiten en esa escena. De esta forma, facilita que el director se enfoque en que los actores cumplan su papel y se logren mejores resultados a nivel narrativo”.
Además, como cuenta Alejandro, “dentro de los efectos visuales entra una parte importante y es la animación 3D. Muchos escenarios, personajes o elementos no se tienen en un rodaje, entonces se crean tridimensionalmente en un software 3D donde podemos construir desde apartamentos y ciudades enteras, hasta pequeños objetos como props (accesorios), armas, trajes especiales para poner encima de los actores, etc”.
“Los buenos efectos visuales son los que no se notan y ayudan a las historias a ser maravillosamente creíbles”.
Profesionales integrales
“Hoy en día la diferencia entre una empresa exitosa y otra que no lo sea es las ganas de ser mejor cada día”, afirma Alejandro. Esas ganas se traducen en cultivar la curiosidad y tener conocimiento integral. “Para poder ser un buen artista de efectos visuales o de animación 3D, no nos debemos enfocar únicamente en aprender a manejar un par de programas. Debemos apalancar ese conocimiento con una carrera profesional que sea afín a la producción audiovisual, llámese comunicación, publicidad, diseño, comunicación gráfica publicitaria etc., para prestar un servicio más profesional e integral”.
“En ese sentido”, complementa Alejandro, “mi llamado es para que lo jóvenes y los estudiantes se empeliculen más para ser cada día más profesionales, que se formen en cinematografía y lenguaje audiovisual y aprendan a manejar técnicas nuevas, software, plugins, etc. Hoy en día hay tutoriales que son de fácil acceso, para poder construir y complementar el conocimiento”.
“Tu oficina puede quedar en cualquier lugar del mundo, si tienes buena visibilidad en internet”
Hace pocos años, eran muy pocas las personas en Colombia que se atrevían a especializarse en efectos visuales. Actualmente, dice Alejandro, “hay más oportunidades para este tipo de emprendedores o empresas, no solo por las leyes que están invitando a los realizadores del exterior a que inviertan en el país, sino porque cada vez más se ha adquirido una conciencia de calidad internacional dentro de las agencias de publicidad y productoras y eso hace que cada vez se exijan más en el acabado”.
“Tenemos referentes todo el tiempo como el cine americano, YouTube y Netflix, que permanentemente nos están bombardeando con superproducciones y acá, desde las agencias de publicidad, los anunciantes y realizadores, teniendo como modelo ese trabajo internacional, nos estamos exigiendo más y eso nos ha dado nuevas oportunidades de trabajo, nos está abriendo mercados y está haciendo que cada vez se mejore el nivel”.
Hoy en día, además, internet se ha vuelto una plataforma imprescindible para la proyección internacional. «No se necesita tener una oficina en Toronto, Los Ángeles o Barcelona. Hoy en día tu oficina puede quedar en cualquier lugar del mundo, si tienes una buena visibilidad en internet. Todos nuestros clientes llegan a través de internet y sí es un negocio muy rentable cuando uno es profesional y logra los estándares que están esperando los clientes internacionales”, comenta Alejandro.
La reflexión final está dirigida a los realizadores, a que pierdan el miedo a incorporar artistas de efectos visuales y animación 3D a sus proyectos. “Existe una preocupación por los costos. Estamos acostumbrados a ver las grandes producciones de Hollywood, asumimos que siempre son miles de millones de dólares, y sentimos que acá no se pueden hacer porque son unos costos muy altos. En Colombia vivimos en una economía diferente, y nos permite jugar con precios que se ajusten más al mercado local. No son tarifas exorbitantes o absurdas y, definitivamente, se pueden ajustar a las producciones nacionales”.

Para concluir, le preguntamos a Alejo cuáles películas destaca por su trabajo de efectos visuales:
- Jurassic Park (1993). “Fue una película inspiradora en su momento. La evolución y el cambio de lo análogo a lo digital marcó un hito en la historia de los efectos visuales. Por primera vez, los animales creados digitalmente se sentían reales y transmitían toda esa majestuosidad propuesta por Steven Spielberg”.
- Avatar (2009). “Con la ayuda de la captura de movimiento y captura de actuación (facial), James Cameron logró superar la gran dificultad de presentar humanos o humanoides digitales completamente creíbles e hiperrealistas. Avatar marcó la historia de los efectos visuales, poniendo el listón en lo más alto”.
- Gravity (2013). “Alfonso Cuarón, el director y guionista mexicano alcanzó, con su creatividad y la tecnología, a enseñarnos cómo realmente se siente el espacio exterior.
- El Libro de la Selva (2016). “Esta maravillosa fábula dirigida por Jon Favreau, nos atrapa en un fantástico mundo construido digitalmente y nos convence de la vida que tienen sus diferentes personajes”.
